28/07/2010

The Mayor of Totana, José Martínez Andreo; along with the ediles of the department of the Citizenship , Juan Carrión, and Culture, Ana Belén García;  recently visited more than thirty high school students from IES “Prado Mayor” and “Juan de la Cierva". These were participating in an innovative experiment involving the excavation and research of “La Tira del Lienzo”, a fortified Argaric settlement located near the Sports City "Sierra Espuña".

The visit was guided by Vicente Lull, Professor of Prehistory at the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, and the Professor of History and Geography José Antonio González Guerao.

This broad experience has counted with the support and cooperation of the General Directorate of Fine Arts and Cultural Heritage of Murcia.  This initiative was born under the coordination of the group of professionals currently working within the project "La Bastida".  As explained by Professor Lull, the aim is to "approach the archeology to the general public, specially to these young students, through the active participation in the different fields of study of the archaeology”.

In this sense, the edile of the department of Citizenship wanted to thank “ the excelent collaboration of all the public bodies and legal entities involved in this Project, especially to the company Hermanos Palomares, which has ceded the plot of land and the infrastructure necessary to carry out this initiative”.

In turn, Professor Vicente Lull explained that his team is carrying out diggings and research tasks to evaluate the state of conservation and to make a preliminary assessment of the information, which can contribute to the knowledge and understanding of Prehistory in the south east of the peninsula and to the Argaric Culture in particular. According to the expert, “La Tira del Lienzo” is a fortress of more than 20 dwellings where there have been found graves, pottery, collar beads, etc.

The town hall of Totana, through the departments of Education, Culture and Tourism and the department of Citizenship, has provided the material that has been installed in the Project place. They have also covered the cost of liability and accident and illness insurance for the 33 volunteer students, whose cost is 112,20€. This will facilitate the participation of the students in other leisure activities organized by the different municipal areas.

The mayor of Totana emphasized the “innovative spirit of this great project that pretends to foster the research spirit and scientific knowledge of the first historical civilizations in the students through the new technologies”. And finally, he thanked the teamwork of the different municipal areas.

Besides, the mayor highlighted that "the new diggings will contribute to the importance of La Bastida, since it deals about the fortresses defensing the big city".
