Physical Anthropology

We have documentation on 155 graves that were discovered in previous excavations of La Bastida. In addition, we have 43 graves found in recent excavations. Most graves are urns, whilst graves and cists are a minority. From these, three urns had lids or grave goods, but didn’t contain human remains. This may be the case of  cenotaphs, a phenomenon observed as well in other Argaric sites.

The funerary remains give us information on the structure of the Argaric society. The differences observed among the grave goods (tools, weapons, ornaments, offerings, vessels) indicate the capacity of the groups of organizing funerary rituals to gather wealth. The explanation is specified by the gender and age of the individuals, determined by anthropological criteria, and the pathological evidence that reflects the conditions of life of the different sectors of the society.

The impact of meningitis on the Argaric population, the height and the life expectancy are issues being under study at the moment. On one hand, we know that  Argaric men were not taller 1,60 m and  women no more than 1,50 m. This height was similar to Spain’s population of the last century. Furthermore, the life expectancy was around the 40 years, which was higher than in Greece during the same period.

The isotopic determinations (carbon, nitrogen, strontium) are another analysis included in this research area. These are employed on human bones to define the type of diet, the mobility pattern and the population’s residence.
