A set of loom weights, traces of esparto and linen tissue have been found in La Bastida. These findings give us information of clothing making and basketry activities.
Loom weights have been found isolated or in small groups. The distribution suggests that linen tissue was a major activity.
Obverse and reverse of a loom weight.
One of the research issues is the technological change in the looms and the type of fibers used. Thus, the weights used in the first phase of occupation were large, rectangular and with four holes. While at later times, there were smaller, circular and with only two holes. The remnants of tissue from old and recent excavations permit to determine whether these technical changes in the looms correspond to a different type of yarn.
Esparto grass was a material used very often for the production of vessels and matts. Besides, it was essential in construction to manufacture the ropes that sustained truss beams, transoms and poles.
